West Gam Bay — Lagoons & Snorkel Reefs

Small lagoons to the west, with shallow reefs off Bun Island along the way.

The paddle

The other half-day paddle. West out of the mangroves and along the shore to the small lagoons on the far side of the bay.

Sheltered water for much of the way, with the shallow reefs off Bun Island to one side. Carry a mask — they're worth a stop. The path to the Java Dore viewpoint is not maintained and is not part of this route. Enjoy the cliffs from the water.

You paddle out through the mangrove channels, so the Mangrove Channels route folds naturally into this one.

The area holds
  • Mangrove channels near the base
  • Small lagoons on the west side
  • Shallow reefs off Bun Island
  • Java Dore limestone cliffs, viewed from the water

What you actually paddle depends on the day — these describe the water, not a fixed itinerary.

Prefer a guide? Request a full-day tour. Your guide will choose the best route and timing for the group.

Before you paddle
  • Wind, tide and sea state decide the route and the timing — a route description isn't a real-time safety assessment.
  • Ask us for the day's conditions before you set off. On a rental, stay within your ability.
  • Life jackets are free, and wearing one is required at all times on the water. Every paddler must be able to swim.
  • Every visitor to Raja Ampat needs a Marine Park Permit and Visitor Fee. Please purchase them before your paddle.
